Thorotrast is a suspension of radioactive thorium dioxide first produced in Germany in 1928 and used as a contrast agent until the 1950s. Its principal use was for cerebral angiography: 90% of the estimated 50,000100,000 patients treated received it for this purpose.
Thorium based nuclear fuel is of immense interest to India by virtue of the abundance of Thorium and relative shortage of Uranium. Thorium metal tubes were being cold drawn using copper as cladding to prevent die seizure. After cold drawing, the copper was removed by dissolution in nitric acid. Thorium does not dissolve being passivated by nitric acid.
Aliquots of the samples were measured as a function of equilibration time ranging from a few days to several months. Microcrystalline thorium dioxide ThO2 ·xH2 O(mcr) precipitated as a result from the agglomeration of ∼ 20 nm particles formed by coulometric titration of thorium nitrate solutions at pH = – in M NaCl. Solubility ...
Raman spectroscopic investigations were carried out on proposed nuclear fuel thorium dioxide–uranium dioxide (ThO2–UO2) solid solutions and simulated fuels based on ThO2–UO2. Raman spectra of ThO2–UO2 solid solutions exhibited twomode behavior in the entire composition range. Variations in mode frequencies and relative intensities of Raman modes enabled estimation of composition ...

Acute myeloid leukaemia Thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) Factor Last reviewed for CCPS 08 January 2007. Preliminary questions 36772 there is some evidence that thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) may be a factor in the development of the condition under consideration. 36773 the veteran has received thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) at some time.
Thorium fuel is a bit harder to prepare. Thorium dioxide melts at 550 degrees higher temperatures than traditional Uranium dioxide, so very high temperatures are required to produce highquality solid fuel. Additionally, Th is quite inert, making it difficult to chemically process. This is irrelevant for fluidfueled reactors discussed below.
Thorium dioxide (ThO 2), also called thorium(IV) oxide (IUPAC) is a white, crystalline powder. It was formerly known as thoria or is produced mainly as a byproduct of lanthanide and uranium production .Thorianite is the name of mineralogical form of thorium dioxide.
